CESS (Cumulus Encrypted Storage System) is the native utility and governance token of the CESS Network, a Layer-1 DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) designed for secure, scalable, and privacy-focused data storage and delivery. Think of CESS as the “fuel” that powers a decentralized alternative to traditional cloud providers: it pays for storing and retrieving files, rewards node operators, and underpins on-chain governance decisions. By leveraging novel consensus (R²S), Proof of Idle Space (PoIS), and proxy re-encryption technologies, CESS aims to become the foundational data infrastructure for Web3 applications ranging from AI to decentralized science.

CESS operates through a network of node types—Consensus, Storage, CDN, and TEE—each playing a role in securing the blockchain and managing data. Storage Nodes provide idle disk space via PoIS, ensuring your files remain available and tamper-proof, while CDN Nodes accelerate “hot” data access with millisecond retrieval times. Consensus Nodes run a Reputation Rotational Selection (R²S) PoS algorithm to validate blocks, and TEE Nodes enhance data privacy through secure enclaves. Users pay CESS tokens for storage and bandwidth, and in return, node operators earn CESS rewards proportional to their contributed resources. Together, these elements form a decentralized, trustless data layer for Web3.

Founded in 2019, CESS set out to solve centralized storage’s privacy and censorship risks by building a fully decentralized data network. After several testnet phases throughout 2023–2024—including the Pathfinder Node Program launched in November 2024—the project conducted an $8 million Series A in December 2023 with backing from DWF Labs, Web3 Foundation, and HTX Ventures, among others. As of early 2025, CESS is in its final testnet phase, gearing up for mainnet launch and the token generation event (TGE). This journey—from whitepaper to public testnets—reflects CESS’s commitment to rigorous security audits and community-driven development.

CESS tokens serve four primary roles within the network:

Payments: Users spend CESS to store, retrieve, and distribute data on CESS’s decentralized storage and CDN layers.

Incentives: Node operators (Storage, Consensus, CDN, TEE) earn CESS rewards for providing resources and maintaining uptime.

Governance: Token holders propose and vote on protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and fund allocations via on-chain governance mechanisms.

Staking: Participants can stake CESS to secure Consensus Nodes or nominate validators, sharing in block-production rewards while helping decentralize network security.

You can accumulate CESS tokens through several avenues:

Running a Storage Node: Contribute idle disk space and complete periodic PoIS challenges to earn a share of storage-miner rewards (≈30% of emissions).

Consensus or Cache Mining: Operate Consensus Nodes (15% of emissions) or CDN Nodes (10%) under the R²S protocol to receive block-production incentives.

Pathfinder Node Program: Join the official testnet program launched in Nov 2024 to claim testnet CESS and qualify for mainnet token allocations.

Community Campaigns: Engage in official airdrops, referrals, and DeShare tasks to boost your allocation before TGE.
