Dogecoin (DOGE) is a cryptocurrency and payment system created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke in 2013. The meme-based cryptocurrency shot into popularity during the crypto bull run in 2021, with its value spiking by around 12,000% in the year's first half.
DOGE became one of the most searched cryptocurrencies in the year and gave rise to a whole new category of cryptocurrencies called memecoins or meme coins in the market. Dogecoin's popularity was boosted by celebrities such as Elon Musk, who invested in the coin and praised it as a credible alternative to Bitcoin as it has far lower transaction costs and faster processing capabilities.
